Glioma Food and Herb Studies that Potentiate Chemotherapy

These are links on foods and some herbs, mostly cooking herbs, that can help to reduce cancer growth.

As most people will use a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation these foods can potentiate treatments and lessen the risk of cancer growing back again.

For glioma I have used the main chemotherapy drug Temozolomide as a general reference.

You don’t really need to read any of the links unless trying to work out cancer pathways yourself, I have mentioned the foods worth trying in the studies if the substance mentioned in a study is in another food or herb.

I found out about this from a doctor years ago who was from the Brain Tumour Support group in Canberra, he told me about Boswellia, I told him about bromelain.

Boswellia or frankincense has been used for years to prevent damage from edema or swelling in brain cancer.

Because Boswellia is a blood thinner, Boswellia tablets may be unsafe while surgery is happening and waiting 3 to 4 weeks after surgery before trying it is needed.

If someone is using warfarin, Boswellia, bromelain and turmeric are all blood thinners and not safe to use with warfarin.

‘Considering the cardiotoxicity of TMZ or Temozolomide and anti-EGFR drugs, we evaluated the putative cardioprotective effects of BA or Boswellic acid in adult cardiomyocytes. BA significantly increased the anticancer activities of TMZ and Afatinib.’… ‘Notably, BA exerts also cardioprotective effects in combination to both drugs’

Boswellic acid has anti-inflammatory effects and enhances the anticancer activities of Temozolomide and Afatinib, an irreversible ErbB family blocker, in human glioblastoma cells

Boswellia and the effect on Brain Tumour edema is here, this is a good review

Boswellia shows potential in mitigating cerebral edema caused by radiochemotherapy

Boswellia can be a strong painkiller too. ‘analgesic activity of Boswellia serrata’

I found Boswellia tablets have a bit of a nausea effect but does reduce pain.

I would not take it all the time due to the nausea effect.

I did experiment for a long time with Frankincense oil, maybe 10 pure drops in a 25ml bottle of almond oil for neck problems and that worked well so that is a topical way to use Boswellia.

Gingers are great for nausea and in looking this up mango ginger from Indian stores may be stronger than the chemo. The sushi gingers in a jar are  useful for nausea, all are good.

‘Mango ginger (Curcuma amada Roxb.) is among the less-investigated species of Curcuma for anticancer properties. We have investigated the anticancer potential and the mechanism of action of a supercritical CO2 extract of mango ginger (CA) in the U-87MG human glioblastoma cell line. CA demonstrated higher cytotoxicity than temozolomide…’

As glioma cells express high CD44 which encourages spread bromelain is an anti-inflammatory that cleaves CD44 which is why bromelain helps to stop tumour spread.

High Expression of CD44 Predicts a Poor Prognosis in Glioblastomas

This study below means bromelain can reduce tumour spread, I have used bromelain for about 15 years for serious autoimmune skin problems and chemical sensitivity.

Bromelain Reversibly Inhibits Invasive Properties of Glioma Cells

Again, due to blood thinning bromelain should only be used around a month after surgery but then bromelain can safely prevent bruising, infections, and scarring.

Bromelain goes well with lysine.

Lysine tablets and vitamin C should probably be used along with surgery anyway as they are the main building blocks of collagen, cancer cells also release collagen destroying enzymes so taking lysine and vitamin C makes more collagen to stop tumour spread. Lysine also stops bleeding and has been used successfully on stroke victims.

That is well explained here, great for heart disease. About 1 tablet of each with meals 3 times a day is the basic dose.

The Collagen Connection

To get around any possible bleeding problems from chemo from lowering platelets you can drink papaya leaf tea using a teaspoon a day to raise the platelet levels.

It probably goes well in a coffee plunger with green tea, plus rosemary to help cope with chemo liver damage, and peppermint for taste.

As I am a bromelain user, I use lysine for my skin problems and often use papaya leaf tea for platelets to stop any nosebleed possibilities, mainly a dry weather winter thing.

Because papaya leaf is such a strong anticancer tea with few side effects just the effect on platelets is worth knowing.

EGCG is from green tea, it has anticancer as well as anti-inflammatory effects.

‘Nevertheless, EGCG induces cell death, prevents cellular proliferation, and limits invasion in multiple glioma cell lines. Furthermore, EGCG enhances the efficacy of anti-glioma therapies, including irradiation, temozolomide, carmustine, cisplatin, tamoxifen, and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand, but reduces the effect of bortezomib.’

EGCG inhibits properties of glioma stem-like cells and synergizes with temozolomide through downregulation of P-glycoprotein inhibition

Rosemary tea affects p450 enzymes so makes opiates and painkillers work better as well as helping to protect the liver, or lemon balm which also has rosmarinic acid in it may be useful.

Rosemary is good for pain and muscles anyway so can go into food as well.

‘Our data suggest that differently prepared lemon balm extracts differently affect glioblastoma cells and can be used as neuroprotective agents in several therapeutic strategies.’

Rosmarinic Acid and Melissa officinalis Extracts Differently Affect Glioblastoma Cells.

Chewing a stick of celery and spitting out the bits is useful as a kidney fixer and the potassium helps moderate blood pressure, not too much, maybe one stick a day, two at most.

Because celery is very high in luteolin it may be good to get into the diet.

Silibinin is in milk thistle tablets which protects the liver from chemo, if milk thistle tablets get used you need to drink more water.

Anti-tumor activities of luteolin and silibinin in glioblastoma cells

Luteolin or celery also reduces the CD44 attachment.

‘Oligosaccharides generated from hyaluronic acid bind to the CD44 receptor on the membranes of endothelial cells to trigger their proliferation, migration, and eventually angiogenesis. Luteolin has been found to be a potent inhibitor of hyaluronidase and maintain the neovascularization barrier’

Luteolin, a flavonoid with potentials for cancer prevention and therapy

Luteolin is in oregano, peppermint, sage, thyme, bell peppers, radicchio, and celery plus olive oil so use olive oil in cooking. Celery still has the highest level of luteolin in a food.

A basic balancing act for cancer and DNA is to have enough selenium and vitamin A.

For selenium I generally use 2 to 3 Brazil nuts a day which is safe.

Eating more than 5 Brazil nuts a day may be too much selenium.

Rational incorporation of selenium into temozolomide elicits superior antitumor activity associated with both apoptotic and autophagic cell death

Selenium enhances TRPA1 channel-mediated activity of temozolomide in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells

All trans retinoic acid is the drug form of vitamin A they use in cancer treatment, for a lay person eating red, orange, and yellow veggies in meals is the safest way to get vitamin A or use cod liver oil.

All-trans retinoic acid enhances temozolomide-induced autophagy in human glioma cells U251 via targeting Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway

I found a study on foods listed to prevent drug resistance, so vitamin A was included, garlic sulphurs, Apigenin from common food items such as celery, parsley, citrus fruits, chamomile.

Anthocyanins include most berries, black raspberries, black currants, blueberries, blackberries, red cabbage, black plums, red radish, red raspberries.

Green tea was listed in here too.

Resveratrol is another and these have resveratrol, the skin of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, mulberries. Resveratrol gets sold as a supplement if berries are too sweet, also anti-inflammatory.

Resveratrol enhances the antitumor effects of temozolomide in glioblastoma via ROS-dependent AMPK-TSC-mTOR signaling pathway

One vitamin worth taking is vitamin B3 which helps blood flow, I use 2 to 3 x 500mg of B3 a day with food to stop asthma.

B3 is a bit speedy at first so if possible, trying a half tablet is best, it has antidepressant effects too.

B3 is a PARP inhibitor and in studies seems to potentiate chemo.

Nicotinamide, a Poly [ADP-Ribose] Polymerase 1 (PARP-1) Inhibitor, as an Adjunctive Therapy for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease

PARP Inhibitors in Glioma: A Review of Therapeutic Opportunities

B3 does this in many studies ‘It seems that nicotinamide may potentiate the effects of chemotherapeutics’.

Melatonin has enormous anticancer effects, cheap ‘go to’ ways to raise melatonin are eating cherries or drinking cherry juice before bed or drinking thyme tea which is also an antibiotic tea.

There are supplements with melatonin or just avoiding computers and TV’s after 9 o’clock and sleeping helps melatonin levels.

Vitamin B6 100mg to 200mg also helps melatonin if taken in the morning as B6 makes serotonin which then converts to melatonin at night.

Melatonin’s Antineoplastic Potential Against Glioblastoma

The good way to stop seizures is to use taurine powder in water, it is an epileptic preventative and seems to work well with the chemotherapy.

The way to use taurine is to get a tub of taurine powder like Healthwise and use either half or less of a teaspoon at a time in case taurine causes sleepiness or dizziness.

I use taurine in water for bone fixing and eyes, it also helps kidneys, anyone you know with these problems let them know taurine helps.

I can use a full teaspoon of taurine mixed in muesli before sleep.

This is a mouse study just to show you taurine helps epilepsy, there are not enough studies on people.

For people worried about COVID from attending hospital taking vitamin B3 may help breathing while using black cumin seed in meals is a basic antiviral that also seems to go well with the chemotherapy.

Thymoquinone is in black cumin seed.

‘TQ enhanced the anti-cancer activity of TMZ’

Thymoquinone synergistically potentiates temozolomide cytotoxicity through the inhibition of autophagy in U87MG cell line

‘Thymoquinone (TQ), the main bioactive component of Nigella sativa L., has exhibited anticancer effects in numerous preclinical studies. Due to its multitargeting nature, TQ interferes in a wide range of tumorigenic processes and counteract carcinogenesis, malignant growth, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis. TQ can specifically sensitize tumor cells towards conventional cancer treatments and minimize therapy-associated toxic effects in normal cells. Its potential to enter brain via nasal pathway due to volatile nature of TQ adds another advantage in overcoming blood-brain barrier.’

Therapeutic Potential of Thymoquinone in Glioblastoma Treatment: Targeting Major Gliomagenesis Signaling Pathways

‘Thymoquinone (TQ), the main active ingredient of black seed oil, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory and anticoagulant activities. TQ also increases the activity and number of cytokine suppressors, lymphocytes, natural killer cells, and macrophages, and it has demonstrated antiviral potential against a number of viruses, including murine cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and other coronaviruses. Recently, TQ has demonstrated notable antiviral activity against a SARSCoV-2 strain isolated from Egyptian patients and, interestingly, molecular docking studies have also shown that TQ could potentially inhibit COVID-19 development through binding to the receptor-binding domain on the spike and envelope proteins of SARS-CoV-2, which may hinder virus entry into the host cell and inhibit its ion channel and pore forming activity.’

Also, black cumin has no effect on bleeding but prevents clotting caused by cancer cells.

So black cumin should be safe to use after surgery.

' Both extracted and pure THQ had minimal effects on normal blood coagulation.'

' THQ has a minimal effect on basal coagulation and can reverse CAT ( cancer-associated thrombosis) in vitro, possibly by interfering with the crosstalk between inflammation and coagulation. This study suggests the utility of THQ as a preventative anticoagulant and/or as a supplement to existing chemotherapies and anticoagulant therapies.'
